About

Dr. John B. O'Connell's Bio

Dr. O'Connell has been involved in heart failure and transplantation since 1983. He started the Loyola University Medical Center Heart Transplant Program where he held the position of Medical Director from 1984-1986.


In addition he held the Medical Directorship title at UTAH Cardiac Transplant Program from 1986-1991. For the next 14 years Dr. O'Connell had served as Chairman, Department of Medicine at both the University of Mississippi Medical Center and at Wayne State University. In 2005 he took the opportunity to start Northwestern University's heart transplant program in Chicago, which has quickly become known as a Center of Excellence in transplantation.


Dr. O'Connell has also held the position of President of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) from 1991-1992 and continues to be very involved. Along with having more than 25 years of experience in heart failure and transplantation, Dr. O'Connell also has considerable experience in both approved and experimental ventricular assist devices (VADs). Saint Joseph's Medical Group is happy to have recruited him and his experience in Heart Failure and Transplantation in 2009.
